Basic Coverages in a Homeowner’s Policy
Property Damage Coverage
Designed to help pay for damage to your home and personal property.
- Dwelling: Covers repair or replacement of your home’s structure from covered perils.
- Other Structures: Protects detached garages, tool sheds, and other unattached structures — generally 10% of the amount your home is insured for.
- Personal Property: Covers loss of personal possessions such as clothing, furniture, electronics, and other items. Ask us about coverage limits for higher-value items.
Personal Property Floater
A standard homeowners policy provides limited coverage for collectibles, jewelry, furs, and other valuables. A Personal Property Floater itemizes and schedules specific items, typically providing broader protection — including perils excluded from your base policy.
Personal Liability Coverage
Protects you against non-auto claims in which you are at fault. Liability coverage pays both the cost of defending you in court and any damages ordered — with no deductible before the insurer pays.
Medical Payments Coverage
Pays for injuries to someone outside your family who is hurt on your property — helping settle minor claims before they escalate. This coverage excludes the policyholder and resident family members.
Additional Living Expenses
If your home is badly damaged by a covered loss and you need to temporarily move out, your homeowners policy will normally cover hotel or apartment costs, subject to policy limits.
